I once read that in England you can find 18th century graffiti that reads "god save the king," which inspired the chorus for this song. After several re-writes, I decided that the king should be Elvis, not George III; and the graffiti artist should be a 1977 punk rocker, not an 18th century royalist. The result was this historically uninformed 1977 rock n' roll fantasy.
